I learned to knit as a child, but it made a dramatic comeback in my life in 2011, thanks in part to the Sarah Lund sweater. After I finished working on this, I’ve been knitting ever since, almost everyday if I can.
There are many things about this craft that resonate with me; the tactile nature of handwork, the slow and solitary nature of planning and carrying out a project. As someone who rarely likes any clothing in the shops, I really enjoy planning, knitting and wearing something I made myself. The internet, of course, is an amazing resource and I have really learned to develop my making skills to tailor projects to my liking and vastly increase my knowledge of the materials available and the history of this craft.
Sewing is also a craft that I have begun to explore; between this and knitting I am almost always wearing clothing that I made myself. Of course, many of my clothes are shop-bought - but I always try to repair these, perhaps with patches, embroidery or darning. Luckily the growing trend for visible mending means that you can let your imagination go with the materials, methods and colours that you use and not worry too much about about being neat and perfect!
